The plays. The workshops. Oh my.

Alliance Theatre announces its 2025/26 season

Plays. Workshops. Atlanta’s nationally acclaimed Alliance Theatre has unveiled the lineup for its 57th season, promising a dynamic blend of classic revivals, bold new works and exciting artistic collaborations. Under the artistic direction of Tinashe Kajese-Bolden and Christopher Moses and Managing Director Mike Schleifer, the season reflects the Alliance’s commitment to storytelling that resonates—entertaining, joyful and profoundly human.

“We’re thrilled to share such deeply moving stories next season—a mix of beloved classics, vital new works from emerging voices, multi-disciplinary collaborations, and a monumental new musical by a global icon,” say Kajese-Bolden and Moses. “These productions remind us why we gather, laugh, cry, and reflect together.”

From a new musical inspired by Matt de la Peña’s “Milo Imagines the World” to a co-produced “Fiddler on the Roof” with The Atlanta Opera, the season opens new doors and reimagines tradition. There’s also “Covenant,” a Southern Gothic thriller making its Atlanta premiere, and the world premiere of “Basura,” a groundbreaking musical from Gloria and Emily Estefan, directed by Broadway visionary Michael Greif.

Anchored by innovation, inclusion and impact, the season includes the debut of the Goizueta Stage for Youth & Families, a transformative space for Atlanta’s youngest theatre-goers, backed by the Alliance’s $10 million Imagine Endowment campaign. With shows for every age and stage—including touring productions, Theatre for the Very Young and student-centered innovation through the Reiser Lab and Kendeda Playwriting Competition—the Alliance continues to shape the future of storytelling, one groundbreaking season at a time.

This season’s Alliance Series is sponsored by The Coca-Cola Company. The Hertz Series is sponsored by Warner Bros. Discovery.  The Family Series is sponsored by Delta Air Lines Inc., while the Alliance’s production of “A Christmas Carol” is presented by Chick-fil-A.

Basura (World Premiere; Musical)
The Inspiring True Story of Finding Music in Unlikely Places
May 30 – July 12, 2026
The Coca-Cola Stage at Alliance Theatre
1280 Peachtree Street NE, Atlanta

Music & Lyrics by Gloria Estefan and Emily Estefan
Book by Karen Zacarías
Directed by Michael Greif
Choreography by Patricia Delgado
Music Supervision, Orchestrations and Arrangements by Alex Lacamoire
Dramaturgy by Ken Cerniglia

Nine-time Grammy Award® winner Gloria Estefan—whose music has sold over 100 million records worldwide—has shaped generations through song. Now, she joins her daughter and acclaimed singer-songwriter Emily Estefan, to co-write the music and lyrics for “Basura,” a powerful and bold new musical inspired by the true story of Paraguay’s Recycled Orchestra, where young artists turn scrap material into instruments and music into possibilities. This world premiere musical continues Estefan’s global legacy—proving that music can rise from anywhere and change everything.

What do you do when the world gives you nothing? You build something beautiful. In a community against all odds, an inspired music teacher starts an orchestra for the students, but they have no instruments. Empty paint cans, a fork, and a bent license plate become a violin, an oil drum transforms into a colorful cello, and the newly formed orchestra hits every note to the beat of something bigger. When the students’ instruments become symbols of possibility, the sound is heard around the world.

“Basura” is directed by the Broadway stage visionary Michael Greif (Rent, Dear Evan Hansen), and written by National Latino Playwriting Award-winner Karen Zacarías (Native Gardens, Destiny of Desire). Grammy Award® and Tony Award® winner Alex Lacamoire (Hamilton, In the Heights) is the musical supervisor, orchestrator and arranger. Patricia Delgado (Buena Vista Social Club) will choreograph, and Ken Cerniglia (Hadestown, Newsies) rounds out the team as dramaturg.

Based on the award-winning documentary film Landfill Harmonic, the new musical carries the sound of Paraguay’s Recycled Orchestra farther than anyone could have ever imagined. “Basura” is an unforgettable journey of rhythm, resilience and extraordinary music—a radiant, heart-swelling reminder that even in the most unlikely places, you can build something beautiful.
