Sip. Savor. Celebrate.

Decatur Wine Festival brings world-class wines, gourmet bites and good vibes to the Square

The wine. The food. The Square. The beauty of it all. If you are planning to do one thing this weekend,  put the Decatur Wine Festival at the top of your list. With 350-plus wine selections from around the world at 70 tasting tables, you will have a front-row seat to some of the best wines in the world.

Presented by the Decatur Arts Alliance and Decatur Package Store the Festival—Nov. 9, from 12:30 p.m.-4:30 p.m. in Downtown Decatur—is a who’s who and what’s what in wine tasting, including a stellar collection of ciders and non-alcoholic options. And, to make things even more appealing, the gathering is the main fundraising event for the Alliance, a 501(c)3 nonprofit that helps connect the community through year-round art programming.

The wine offerings are complements of Decatur Package Store owner Herb Chereck. Thanks to his close relationships with some of the area’s best distributors, Chereck always provides an array of options to test your palette.  “I couldn’t tell you how much it means to have Herb working with us,” says Angie Macon, Executive Director of the Decatur Arts Alliance. “His leadership on this provides us access to wines we would never be able to have without him.”

One of the festival’s treats is his “Must Try” offerings, which always help deliver the uniqueness of the event. For example, this year, take the Garzon Tannat Reserva. The juicy, full-bodied wine from Uruguay is rich purple in color with very fresh aromas reminiscent of red and black fruits such as plums and raspberries.

Or, the Flora Lisa Pinot Grigio. Produced in the warmer climate of Central Italy, the wine offers a unique flavor profile of richer fruit, adding notes of tangerine to the traditional green apple, peach and citrus, rounder texture and more exuberant aromatics.

The non-alcoholic Wölffer “Spring in a Bottle” Sparkling Rose from Rheinhessen, Germany is a bright rose color wine featuring fine earthy notes with wonderful red berry fruit and ripe peach and fresh pear fills the glass.

If you’re looking for your Festival agenda, here it is. Each ticket holder receives a commemorative tasting glass and access to the wines, and cider and non-alcoholic options.

Attendees also have the option to purchase a $20 chip, which provides access to their own bottle of wine to take home after the event is over. In addition, there are a number of local vendors offering a variety of savory and sweet snacks for purchase throughout the event. You could grab a burger to pair with your red wines, a crepe for your sparkling wines, or go all macaroni and cheese with your white wines. Add in a live DJ and you have a dance party that is not to be missed.

“This is our main fundraising event for the Decatur Arts Alliance, which is known for its commitment to public art in Decatur,” Macon says. “It is a way for us to help cultivate the arts in our artistic community. So, if you love art and you love building community through art, this is a good event for you.”
